How Solar Power Works for University of Toledo

This project promotes the university’s commitment to sustainability and provides students with firsthand educational experiences with renewable technologies.  The installation utilizes thin-film-on-glass photovoltaic solar technology that was originally developed based on research at The University of Toledo.

Project Overview

  • 1.2 MW DC solar array and wind turbine
  • 14,952  First Solar 75 DC Watts Solar Array and WES 18 80 kW Wind Turbine used
  • 1,380,000 kilowatt hours of electricity anticipated to be generated annually
  • 20-year power purchase agreement
  • Commissioned April 2010

Why did the university chose solar?

The University of Toledo, a national leader in solar energy research, committed the Scott Park Campus of Energy and Innovation to advance renewable, alternative and sustainable energies.  The campus serves as a hands-on alternative energy laboratory used for teaching, research and demonstration, as well as to host the generation of energy and reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

With many top researchers and aspiring solar entrepreneurs on campus it was a natural fit for UT to include on-site solar power at its Scott Park Campus.  Displaying and utilizing the solar equipment promotes the university’s green commitment.

Environmental Benefits

  • Each year, the solar and wind power system at The University of Toledo will generate the same amount of electricity that, with non-renewable resources, would result in the release of more than 1,241 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
  • 1,241 metric tons of carbon dioxide reduction is equivalent to:
    • 243 passenger vehicles removed from the road each year
    • Electricity use of more than 155 average American homes
    • Emissions from the consumption of 2,885 barrels of oil

Power Purchase Agreement

By financing this project through a 20-year power purchase agreement, Constellation required no upfront capital from The University of Toledo and kept its power costs fixed at a lower than projected market rates.
