R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant

R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant is located on 426 acres along the south shores of  Lake Ontario in Ontario, NY - about 20 miles northeast of Rochester and 53 miles southwest of Constellation Energy’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. Constellation Energy bought Ginna, a pressurized one-unit water reactor generating 490 MWs, on June 10, 2004.

Key Facts
Location: Ontario, NY
Fuel Type: Nuclear
Reactor: Pressurized light water reactor
  Capacity: 581 MW

Online: June 1, 1970

Operating License: 2029

Ownership: Constellation Energy and EDF
Architect/Engineer/ Constructor: Bechtel Power Corp.

Environment
Local farmers lease a portion of Ginna’s property and maintain the land and apple orchards, which allow Ginna to naturally blend into the surrounding farming community. In winter, the farmed land provides a food source for the wildlife that abound. The heavily wooded areas and creeks running through the property provide a healthy circle of life for all. Many migratory birds find Ginna a suitable haven either prior to or after their lake crossings.

Security
At Constellation Energy, the safety and security of our community, employees and neighbors is the top priority. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the company has built upon a strong foundation to further enhance site security.  Studies by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Progressive Policy Institute all confirm that nuclear power plants are the most secure facilities in the entire U.S. industrial infrastructure.
