Environment
The nature of our business closely links Constellation Energy to the natural resources we share with neighbors around our facilities. We continue to work to earn the trust of the communities where we do business by designing, building, and operating our facilities in ways designed to protect the environment.

Taking Steps to Cleaner Air

Constellation Energy has made major environmental investments and improvements at its generation facilities, continuing to focus on those improvements that deliver the greatest benefits to public health and welfare. In the last few years alone, the company has spent more than $190 million on emission-reducing equipment and upgrades at its facilities and continues to evaluate new technologies. Over the past 10 years, we’ve spent more than a quarter billion dollars to make our air cleaner.

Expanding Bioenergy Use

In 2002 Constellation was one of five companies selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to manage its national Biomass & Alternate Methane fuels program for federal government facilities. DOE's goal is to make bioenergy cost competitive with traditional energy sources by fueling steam boilers, hot-water heaters, engines, and vehicles with alternate methane fuels and biomass materials—such as waste wood, food and feed crop residues, and animal wastes.

Nuclear Plant License Renewal

In 2001 the Edison Electric Institute awarded Constellation Energy its prestigious Edison Award for groundbreaking work leading to renewal of operating licenses for our Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. With programs to ensure continued high levels of operating safety and performance, and the approval of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, we can generate emission-free electricity at Calvert Cliffs for up to an additional 20 years.
