The nation's nuclear power plants are among the safest and most secure industrial facilities in the United States. Multiple layers of physical security, together with high levels of operational performance, protect plant workers, the public and the environment.
Operational Safety
Stringent federal regulation, automated, redundant safety systems and the industry’s commitment to comprehensive safety procedures keep nuclear power plants and their communities safe.
Personnel Training and Screening
Operators receive rigorous training and must hold valid federal licenses. All nuclear power plant staff are subject to background and criminal history checks before they are granted access to the plant.
Plant Security
Each nuclear power plant has extensive security measures in place to protect the facility from intruders. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the nuclear energy industry has substantially enhanced security at nuclear plants.
Emergency Preparedness
Every nuclear power plant in the country has a detailed plan for responding in the event of an emergency. Companies test that plan regularly, with the participation of local and state emergency response organizations. Constellation Energy provides this information in an annual calendar sent to residence. This information is also available here:

Safe Operations and Plant Security
Constellation Energy's nuclear power plants achieve positive ratings for safety and performance from regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). U.S. commercial nuclear plants are among the most secure industrial facilities in the world. Since September 11, 2001, security has been significantly strengthened. The NRC has issued new security requirements for nuclear plant sites during the past two years, and all U.S. plants have met these requirements. Constellation Energy nuclear plants comply with the NRC security program.
U.S. NRC Fact Sheet – Safety and Security Improvements at Nuclear Plants
U.S. NRC Security Spotlight
Security Spotlights are a new information product developed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to help illustrate and explain the security improvements made to the nuclear sector since Sept. 11th, and new security changes that are in process. These one-page sheets are a complement to the lengthier fact sheets and backgrounders already available to the public on this important topic.
