Potassium Iodide (KI)

Potassium Iodide (KI) is a nonprescription medication that keeps the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine. State or local officials could recommend the use of potassium iodide as an additional protective action.

Taking Potassium Iodide (KI)

State and local officials will announce when the public should take KI in repeated emergency broadcast messages. Taking KI does not protect a person or a thyroid from direct exposure to radiation. Taking KI only saturates the thyroid with nonradioactive iodine so there’s no room left to absorb radioactive iodine. For most people, KI is safe. However, reactions are possible for people who already have thyroid conditions and people who are allergic to iodine, such as in shellfish. Anyone considering the use of KI should consult with a healthcare provider. Follow the directions for storage and use included with the product. The State of Maryland and local authorities distributed KI to schools located within the 10-mile radius of the plant. Residents living within 10 miles of Calvert Cliffs may pick up KI by contacting their local health departments.
