New Sirens Now in Service

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant

On Dec. 1 local county emergency management agencies and Constellation Energy Group's Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant transferred service from a 1981 emergency siren system to a new, more flexible emergency siren system. Because the new system uses modern technology, the sirens are also easier to maintain. The old sirens will be removed over the next few months.

In 2004, the emergency sirens will be tested on the first Monday of each month with a short growl sound in Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties and a 3-minute sound in Dorchester County.

REMEMBER

Anyone who hears a full 3-minute siren at any time other than the scheduled full cycle test, should tune in to a local radio station for emergency instructions. In southern Maryland, those stations are:

  • 1560 AM
  • 102.9 FM
  • 97.7 FM
  • 1690 AM
  • 98.3 FM
  • 104.1 FM
  • 1460 AM
  • 96.7 FM
  • 1240 AM
  • 106.3 FM
