Constellation Adds 38 Megawatts of Solar Generation in 2013

January 23, 2014

BALTIMORE (Jan. 23, 2014) — Constellation today announced that it added 38 megawatts of customer-sited solar generation in 2013 in Arizona, California, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia, bringing its total solar generation in operation or under construction for commercial, industrial and public sector customers to more than 164 megawatts.

With 58 projects and 177 installations in 10 states and the District, Constellation is the third-largest commercial solar developer in the U.S.* For more information about Constellation’s solar business, click here.

“Customers recognize that on-site solar generation is a smart solution for achieving sustainability objectives and proactively managing long-term electricity costs,” said Gary Fromer, senior vice president, energy management programs for Constellation. “Our focus on providing customer value, in markets and circumstances in which solar deployments make good business sense, continues to drive significant growth in our customer-sited project deployments.”

In 2013, Constellation completed a 2.7-megawatt solar project for Owens Corning’s thermal and acoustical insulation plant in Feura Bush, N.Y., designed to supply approximately 6 percent of the plant’s annual electricity needs. Financed, owned and maintained by Constellation, electricity generated by the system is purchased by Owens Corning under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Frank O’Brien-Bernini, vice president and chief sustainability officer for Owens Corning, said, "Having reduced our energy intensity by 30 percent over the past 10 years, Owens Corning is now turning to renewables to further reduce our environmental footprint. Constellation is a great energy partner in helping us develop options and achieve our goals, and we expect more and more successful projects like the PV installation at our New York plant."

Since 2007, Constellation estimates that its customer-sited solar projects have helped avoid the release of more than 505 million pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent emissions from approximately 50,000 passenger vehicles according to U.S. EPA data.

By structuring its solar projects as power purchase or solar services agreements, Constellation offers solar installations that may require no upfront capital from customers and may provide fixed power costs that are comparable to or less than projected market rates.
