Constellation Awards $100,000 in Scholarships to Baltimore City Students

BALTIMORE — Constellation has selected five recent graduates of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute to receive $5,000 scholarships per year for four years as part of the company’s new Rising Scholars program.

The Rising Scholars program emerged from Constellation’s Equity & Inclusion Task Force, a cross-functional team of employees which specifically focuses on driving action to eliminate barriers and create opportunities for employees and the communities Constellation serves.

CEO Jim McHugh and other members of Constellation’s leadership team congratulated the awardees via a Zoom call earlier this summer.

“I applaud our inaugural class of Rising Scholars on their individual achievements to date and look forward to seeing them excel in higher education,” said McHugh. “At Constellation, we are unwavering in our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion both within and outside of the workplace. This program exemplifies our shared goal of addressing societal gaps and strengthening our broader community.”

In addition to the scholarships, each Rising Scholar awardee received a new laptop and will have frequent touchpoints throughout the year with Constellation mentors to gain interviewing tips, resume building support and career advice. There also will be potential for paid internship opportunities with Constellation as the students progress through their college years.

“I am delighted to have been chosen as a Constellation Rising Scholar!” said student Kristiana Smith. “As an award recipient, I am extremely grateful for this offer of support from Constellation. This scholarship program will introduce me to bright and supportive network which will help me advance through my college years and beyond."

Scholarship recipients include:

  • Randy Doan, who will attend UMBC and has plans to major in Computer Science
  • William Kardas, who will attend University of Maryland College Park with plans to major in Math
  • Elizabeth A. Olu-Ajayi, who will attend University of Maryland College Park with plans to major in Physiology & Neurobiology on the Pre-Medicine track
