Heinz Field Invests in Central Energy Plant
The fifth-oldest franchise in the national Football League, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a storied history that includes an NFL record six Super Bowl wins. With all their success, and a new generation of fans to answer to, the Steelers needed a stadium that reflected their impressive legacy.
Faced with the escalated construction costs of a new stadium and challenge of navigating the complexities of newly-competitive energy markets, the Steelers knew they needed a professional energy ally. They enlisted Constellation to design, develop, operate and maintain the central energy plant serving the 65,000-seat Heinz Field. In addition, Constellation built the entire stadium infrastructure for heating, cooling and hot water supply.
Constellation funded this project as a build-own-operate-maintain (BOOM) project for a 20-year term. The Steelers saved over $1.25 million in energy costs over the first five years of the project.
